Oppo F3 Plus goes official: a selfie expert with dual selfie cameras

we have a new Selfie expert on the block. The Oppo F3 Plus doubles the front cameras to get those sweet 120° shots - perfect for capturing all of your friends.
The wide-angle selfies you take with an 8MP camera. For high-resolution solo shots, you get a 16MP main camera (with a regular field of view). The main camera on the back borrows the hardware from the R9s - a 1/2.8” Sony IMX398 sensor behind a bright f/1.7 aperture. There’s Dual Pixel autofocus plus a dual-tone LED flash on board as well.
The similarities continue - the Oppo F3 Plus has a “six string” antenna, meaning it has aesthetically pleasing antenna lines with solid reception.
The new phone is bigger than the R9s, though, it has a sizable 6” screen on the front with sub-2mm bezels on the side. It’s a 1080p screen guarded by Gorilla Glass 5. The battery is larger too - 4,000mAh capacity promises great battery life while VOOC charge will fill it back up lickety-split.
The larger battery allowed Oppo to go for a more powerful chipset - a Snapdragon 653 - which features four Cortex-A73 cores (+ four A53), similar to the top dogs (though built on a less efficient 28nm process). The chipset is hooked up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage (expandable). Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been painted with Color OS 3.0, Oppo’s latest custom software.
The phone is definitely coming out in India, when and for how much is yet to be revealed. The official announcement is coming in tomorrow - what we have here is a case of a page going up prematurely. Hopefully the event will fill us in on those details. We should also see the F3 Plus' smaller brother then - the Oppo F3.

Google outs first developer preview of Android O

“Android O will bring picture-in-picture, improved notifications and battery life”
Google has released the first developer preview of Android O to the world. The new version brings a handful of new features and performance improvements.
Android O brings new automatic limits imposed on applications, and specifically what they can do in the background. It is expected to enhance the performance and battery life of devices. Notifications are also getting an upgrade in Android O, with developers now able to define categories for notification content.
Google introduced Picture-in-Picture (PIP) mode for the first time on Android TV. With Android O, this feature is finally coming to phones and tablets. This feature will let you watch videos while using other apps. Also, Android O is bringing multi-display support, font resources in XML, support for adaptive app icons, Wi-Fi Aware and more.
While Google traditionally releases the name of the new Android versions after Google I/O, the consensus at the moment appears to be ‘Oreo’. The final release of the new version will be released in the third quarter of this year, so you’ll have to wait a while for a stable build on your device. It’s worth mentioning that Android Nougat is only running on around 2.5 percent of total Android phones and tablets as of now.

Ookla’s speedtest results spark a war of words between Airtel and Reliance Jio

“Jio claims Ookla’s speedtest results are flawed”
Speedtest app Ookla rated Airtel the fast mobile carrier in India for the period Q3 and Q4 2016. After the announcement, Airtel ran advertisements on TV and other mediums highlighting the same. But Reliance Jio refuted the claim, filing a complaint against Airtel’s campaign with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), alleging that the ads are false, misleading and incorrect.
In its complaint, Jio noted that Ookla has no accreditation from the Indian government and was colluding with Airtel. The newcomer telco also said that it has served Ookla a legal notice.

In a press release, Jio stated “The core issue is that the speedtest results are attributed to the primary SIM even though the SIM for which the data speedtest is conducted is the secondary SIM in the case of dual-SIM phones. In India, more than 90% of 4G phones are dual-SIM. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the speed which is attributed to Airtel is of the Airtel data network.

Ookla responded to the allegation, saying it was aware of Android’s limitations in not always indicating the data provider in dual-SIM devices. To ensure accurate results, Ookla says it uses additional data sources after the testing process to determine the actual carrier “with a high degree of confidence“. Ookla added that after a complete analysis was performed, Airtel’s margin of victory increased.

Airtel, for it’s part, said that “We believe that this is a deliberate attempt to malign our brand and misguide customers through a campaign of misinformation, which is something we now come across on a regular basis, in particular, on social media platforms

The conflict between Airtel and Reliance Jio have intensified over the last few weeks, with the latter sending out another statement at the time of publishing continuing to disagree with Ookla’s findings.

Airtel offers postpaid users 10GB free data per month for 3 months

“Claim the offer by downloading the MyAirtel app”

Last week, Airtel announced it would be giving its postpaid users a free data surprise on March 13th. The offer has now gone live, and the telco is giving users 10GB of free 4G data per month for three months – 30GB in total.
To claim the free data offer, you need to download the MyAirtel app on Android or iOS, and log in using your number. You’ll see a banner at the top asking you to claim your free data, and clicking on it will credit the data to your account. You’ll receive a confirmation SMS notifying you when the offer has been activated in your account.

Airtel’s free data offer for postpaid users comes soon after the brand announced its ‘Broadband surprises‘ offer for all users. However, in the case of its broadband users, Airtel was offering free data for life, while for postpaid users, it’s just for a few months. Airtel has chosen an apt time to roll out free data to postpaid users, given that Reliance Jio’s Happy New Year offer is expiring at the end of the month, and will require users to recharge for Rs 303 per month if they want to continue the 1GB per day data benefits under its Prime membership.

Samsung introduces AI-based Bixby virtual assistant, coming to the Galaxy S8 first

Samsung’s virtual assistant Bixby is launching on March 29th alongside the Galaxy S8”
Earlier this year, multiple reports had suggested that Samsung will introduce its Bixby voice assistant alongside the Galaxy S8. Now, the Korean tech giant has officially confirmed that the Galaxy S8 will be equipped with Bixby, and has revealed the assistant’s features. The assistant even gets its own dedicated button on the Galaxy S8.
According to SamsungBixby isn’t like other virtual assistants on the smartphones. Instead, it will learn and adapt to users to offer a better experience than the competitors because of its proficiency. Samsung also mentioned three key properties of the assistant – completeness, context awareness and cognitive tolerance.
Samsung said that Bixby will support almost any task that you can perform via touch inside an app, and not just a limited subset. However, it’s worth mentioning that these apps need to support Bixby. Users will be able to summon the assistant at any time, even while using an app.
The cognitive tolerance property of Bixby will allow it to understand commands with incomplete information and trigger the required task. The brand said that this makes this makes the interface more natural and easier to use.
The company revealed that by the time the Galaxy S8 launches, by March 29th i.e., a subset of pre-installed apps will be Bixby-enabled. The brand will be launching more apps that support Bixby in the future. Also, it will release a tool to enable third-party app developers to make their apps and services compatible with Bixby easily.

Paytm to levy 2% fee on wallet recharges by credit card [updated]

Paytm has introduced the fee to prevent misuse of its zero-fee transfers”
[Update: March 10th]: Soon after introducing the two percent fee on wallet recharges by credit card, Paytm has rolled back the charges, “keeping users’ convenience in mind”. The company said that it will continue to build a series of features to prevent misuse of wallet recharges by credit card.

Paytm has announced that it will now levy a two percent fee when you recharge your wallet using a credit card. As per the brand, this has been done to prevent misuse of its zero-fee transfers, explaining that some users were rotating money between their wallet and bank account to earn loyalty points and get free credit. Paytm has clarified the fee is not applicable for transferring money using a debit card or net banking.
It’s worth mentioning that Paytm will reverse the charges on credit cards by issuing users a discount coupon within 24 hours of adding money to the wallet. Users will need to recharge their wallets with Rs 50 or more to avail this offer. The discount coupon can then be applied as a cashback while making any transaction on the service, such as recharges, bill payments, movie tickets, shopping and more. Paytm also noted that the fee on credit cards is only applicable for wallet recharges, and not for any purchases made on its website directly, or with partner apps like Uber, Zomato, Big Basket, Swiggy, etc.
“To avoid this misuse, we are making some changes in our terms. There will be no fee when you shop on Paytm or pay for any utilities using your Credit Card or any other payment option but to avoid the misuse highlighted above, we will put 2% fee (inclusive of taxes) only on adding money to wallet using credit cards while adding money using any other payment option remains free. However, this 2% fee charges on credit card would be reversed in the form of a gift voucher for the same amount which will be issued within 24 hours of adding money effectively giving you this fee back,” Paytm explained in a blog post.
Apart from the fee on credit card recharges, Paytm has also introduced two new payment options – UPI and IMPS. The former is available on the Paytm app and website, while the latter is currently available only on the Paytm website.

Design and display: offers a sleek build with a gorgeous screen

Over the past few months, we’ve seen a lot of manufacturers launching razor-thin laptops, and the ASUS ZenBook 3 is no different. While it may not be the thinnest laptop around, it is quite sleek, being a mere 11.9mm thick. It’s also quite light as it weighs less than a kg and tips the scales at just 910g.
The ASUS ZenBook 3 is a looker as well. With its glossy blue exterior, it’s able to strike the perfect balance between class and the style quotient. The concentric circles around the ASUS logo on the outer lid bounce off light to give it a shiny look. The gold frame also adds to its charm. While we personally love the blue hue, you can also purchase it in grey or gold options.
The device has taken minimalism to the extreme. Thanks to a screen-to-body ratio of 82 percent, you’ll be greeted by an almost bezel-less display as soon as you open the lid. The IPS screen offers full HD resolution. Combined with its screen size of 12.5-inches, it translates to crisp text and sharp images thanks to a pixel density of 176ppi. The colour reproduction is also top-notch and we didn’t find any issues with the brightness levels either, unless viewed in harsh sunlight. We loved watching movies and reading longform content on the laptop as it’s an absolute delight. Protecting the display against scratches is a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 4. However, the screen lacks touchscreen functionality, which is strange omission considering the ZenBook 3s’ high-end positioning.

Flip to the back, and the ideology of minimalism continues. You’ll only see rubber feet and a few screws. There are also two speaker vents.
We also have some questions about the build quality of the ASUS ZenBook 3. While it might look like a metal-based construction, it’s made out of plastic and you start noticing that as soon as you start applying pressure on the keyboard or the touchpad area… which brings us to the next section.

Keyboard: leaves something to be desired

Even with its small footprint, the ASUS ZenBook 3 comes with a full-sized chiclet keyboard. Sadly though, it fails to deliver an optimum typing experience. While there’s good amount of travel, the feedback offered by the keys isn’t that great. Even after getting used to it, we often made errors while typing. We were also not able to type on the keyboard as fast as we could have. However, we loved the backlit functionality as it made typing easier irrespective of the surrounding light. You can also control the backlight intensity and switch between three levels.
The touchpad on the other hand, works fine… but mainly for touch responses rather than firm clicks. It supports all the Windows-specific gestures and responds quickly. The touchpad also has a fingerprint scanner towards its top right, letting you log into the laptop in a jiffy by working in conjunction with Windows Hello. While the fingerprint scanner ensures secure access, the placement could’ve been better.

Hardware: delivers desktop-grade performance

Don’t get fooled by the size of the ZenBook 3 as it’s a beast when it comes to hardware. In fact, it can easily put many big and bulky laptops to shame. Under the hood, it features Intel’s sixth-gen Core i7 quad-core processor, which is tuned at 2.7GHz (Turbo speed up to 3.1GHz). At a time when 8GB RAM seems to be more than sufficient for most users, the ASUS’ offering sports 16 gigs. Needless to say that the combination is as powerful as it can be. There were no lags during our review usage, and opening different apps or switching between them was buttery smooth.
While the ASUS ZenBook 3 lacks dedicated graphics, the integrated Intel 620 GPU is able to deliver a joyful gaming performance for casual titles. Talking about pure numbers, in the PCMark 8 Home test, the laptop scored 2,760 – well above some gaming PCs from a couple of years back. Interestingly enough, unlike its ultra-thin peers which don’t have cooling vents as they use Intel’s fanless SoCs, the ZenBook 3 utilises an efficient cooling system with a liquid-crystal-polymer fan impeller and a copper-alloy heat pipe. However, this setup does get noisy at times.
Storage-wise as well, the ZenBook 3 is quite impressive as it comes with a 512GB SSD.
With Harmon Kardonn speakers, the ZenBook 3 is able to offer impressive sound output. It gets quite loud with two speakers above the keyboard and two at the base – something which is nothing short of remarkable for its thin frame.
While the device might have skimped on ports, it scores full marks when it comes to wireless connectivity. It packs in Bluetooth 4.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi with support for the latest 802.11ac standard.
The ASUS ZenBook 3 draws power from a 40WH Li-Po battery, which promises to deliver up to nine hours of runtime. In our usage though, the numbers weren’t as reliable. At times, it met the promised number, but in others, it would give up within four to five hours of normal usage. Thanks to the support for fast charging however, the laptop can be juiced up quickly.

Verdict

Let’s just say this upfront – the ASUS ZenBook 3 is the Windows-based answer to Apple’s MacBook. It ticks most of the boxes, be it a premium and thin design language, or a gorgeous display… not to mention the powerful internals.
However, that also puts in in a peculiar position. At its price tag of Rs 1,47,999, you can get all sorts of laptops – from 2-in-1s to high-spec’d gaming-centric ones, not to mention the newly-launched Apple MacBook Pro with touchbar. Of course, the ZenBook 3 is aimed at those who are looking to buy an ultraportable machine that can catch everyone’s attention. A similar premise is offered by the HP Spectre x360 13 priced at approximately Rs 1,33,000 and the Acer Spin 7 with an asking price of Rs 1,24,900, both of which have touchscreens and can also be used as convertibles. The Dell XPS 13 is another worthy option with its infinity display and sticker price of roughly Rs 1,30,590. However, none of them are powered by desktop-grade innards like the ZenBook 3.
So, if you’re looking for a loaded and premium laptop, with price not being a consideration, then the ASUS ZenBook 3 offers enough to be in your consideration list.
